It Happens

When I came home at noon today,  grocery bags in hand,  I found Bo and Jon sitting at the kitchen table with Ronnie,  our Hospice nurse.

“Is that MY NANCY?” I hear Bo ask loudly.

“Sure is,”  Ronnie responded.  “Here she comes.”

I put my arms around him from the back of his chair, and he wrapped his around mine, in a good mood and  so much more animated than usual.  Obviously the three of them had been laughing about something when I came in.

Bo tried hard to tell me something that didn’t really make sense, but he was communicating.

“Good day,”  Ronnie said.  “I haven’t seen him this good in a long time.”  Jon and I looked at one another and smiled.

How do you explain what’s happening in Bo’s Alzheimer’s-riddled mind?  He was down,  so far down that we thought it was ending,  and now he’s better than he has been  in a long time.  In fact, Jon took him out for Five Guys hamburgers at lunch yesterday, then to the ice cream store for dessert.  He has asked for food and told us he needs to use the bathroom.  How long has it been since that happened?

Then I asked Bo,  “How are you feeling today?”

“Not so good,” he said.

“Really?  What’s wrong?”

He shrugged his shoulders,  “Shit happens.”

The three of us looked at one another and  laughed out loud.  Where did that come from?

Later, I walked Ronnie out to her car.  “It’s the high’s and low’s of the disease,” she said. “That’s Alzheimer’s. “

It was those highs and lows that were hardest for me. When Richard was so low I prepared for the end (or so I thought) and then we’d get a high. Oh my Nancy I know how exhausting this is! Here is a hug for you !

Oh me too !! Matthew got so sick. He fainted and couldn’t keep anything down. So scary for me. I didn’t see him on line for like 17 hours and I got worried so I did some checking. Then they told me he got sick and fainted and was dehydrated, OMG. I told the husband to get over there (China) and get our kid. The worst had happened. He said, “Why do you think we didn’t tell you ??? We knew you would freak out !!! ” Well they were right. Well they had a mom along on the trip just for that purpose, so she stayed back at the hotel with him and nursed him back to health. I’m just glad he’s home. Both of them will becoming home for Father’s Day. Am so excited to see them. Still haven’t seen my daughter or granddaughter for going on a year now, July 7th to be exact. I pray a lot and cry. I don’t know what I did wrong, but it is really hard some days ❤ I'm sure God will get me through this. I know my Gabriella misses me as much as I miss her. We were so close. Well I hope you and your family are doing well 🙂 Love ya, Patti

  10. Clear day are the best days and may you have many more. Here is an article that I think you may find interesting.

Arginine is an amino acid and can be found in supplements. Further to that the connecting to the digestive system and the auto immune disorders is becoming more apparent (blogged on a bit of this today).

All blessings to you and your family. Thanks for the story.

  11. So good to hear from you, Patti. We can only pray that these awful events in life will work themselves out. I think every family has some bad things happen that are unexplained at the time, and maybe never work out as we hope.
